Permafrost: Hopes and Dreams recording and lost-key help

Source-backed help for recordings, quest keys, Rat Queen renovation and Meet the Leader, with exact prerequisites, unresolved branches and save-safety limits.

Early accessPC

Answer: Hopes and Dreams: play the recording in your journal. Your save may stay blocked if you collected it before starting the quest. For recording 1, follow the collapsed bridge toward the facility, pass the hanging body and check the truck rear. Named key quests: check inventory/reward chest, then Anna or the Skinwalker.

Hopes and Dreams: play the recording in your journal

  1. Open the journal and play the recording to advance the listening objective.
  2. For recording 1, follow the developer's landmarks: travel from the collapsed bridge toward the facility; after the hanging body, look in the back of the truck.
  3. If recording 1 was collected before the quest began, your save may remain stuck. The developer's October 16 update says that case still awaits a fix. Replaying is not a guaranteed repair.

The Lost Wife has a separate known issue: recordings collected out of order may not register. Do not treat its counter as the same objective.

What the 12 October 2026 patch fixes

The 12 October 2026 official Steam news post for Permafrost groups changes under Quest Fixes & Steam Invites. The post states that blocking issues inside the Hopes and Dreams chain have been fixed, while also warning of the old-save exception below. The same post confirms that High Frequency can be completed while Hopes and Dreams is still an active quest in the journal. Treat both statements as patch-level facts read from the developer's news post, not as an in-progress playthrough on this site.

High Frequency: build the radio before the tower

Current developer text (updated 16 October 2026, re-read 18 October 2026) gives this order of operations:

  1. Build a radio at the base before the tower is repaired.
  2. Towers repaired before the quest began may not register towards High Frequency; do not treat a pre-existing tower as the objective step.
  3. This is the developer's current written guidance, not a tested quest run on this site. It is not a guarantee that older saves already unlocked High Frequency retroactively.

Lunar clothing: study, then deliver, then craft Permafrost

The tailoring-bench path for the Lunar clothing objective is also current developer text:

  1. Study the Lunar blueprints from Where It All Began before giving them to Jeremy.
  2. At the tailoring bench, look for the Lunar set under the name Permafrost.
  3. Craft the Permafrost set to complete the Lunar clothing objective.

Correction: the remaining old-save exception

The current journal-play advice narrows our earlier blanket warning, but does not remove the recording-collected-before-quest exception above. This page follows the developer's updated October 16 text; the steps have not been independently playtested.

Original GPT Image explanation of Permafrost quest conditions: when Logan's conditional continuation applies, when Renovate Solar Crossing stays separate, and what each path requires from the prior save state.
Original GPT Image explanation generated 18 October 2026, based on dated developer guidance and the actual player/support threads re-read 18 October 2026. Not game footage, a playtest, an actual UI screenshot or any captured gameplay; no third-party artwork used.

Rat Queen: 0/5 renovation and the conditional Logan option

The developer says repair spots can be missing after the 14 October update. The workaround is conditional:

  1. If you renovated the camp earlier, check Logan’s dialogue for an option saying it is already taken care of.
  2. The developer says this has helped some players continue; it is not a guaranteed repair. If the condition does not match or the option is absent, the reviewed guidance gives no general recovery procedure.
  3. Renovate Solar Crossing / Repair 5 base elements is a separately reported objective. Its player report describes no interactive repair points even after updating, verifying and restarting. As re-read on 20 October 2026, that thread shows one reply, which only agrees with the report, and no developer reply is visible there. Do not assume the Rat Queen option fixes this different objective.

Meet the Leader: skip the dialogue with Space

The developer’s task guidance says to skip the Leader’s dialogue with Space. This is a PC keyboard instruction; a gamepad equivalent was not verified.

The player thread reports the quest not completing after the conversation and dog interaction being unavailable, with one reply of agreement. That report establishes the symptoms, not their cause or a successful repair. We have not tested whether Space restores dog interaction in an affected save.

Lost Connection: the host-to-Anna check

The co-op support reply re-read 20 October 2026 points the host at a short check rather than a repair:

  1. Have the host talk to Anna again and report back to her.
  2. Check whether the Return to Anna objective in the journal actually ticks over. The reported symptom is that the report does not complete and the objective stays open.
  3. If it still does not advance, follow the same thread's stated step for the host: submit the host's save through the official support channel instead of repeating the conversation.

This is developer support advice, not a retest on this site. In the same thread a player who says he is the host reports that both quests are still stuck after submitting a save, and the developer only replies that they will take a look and expect a patch. No confirmed fix, no measured success rate, and no promise that the objective will advance for your save.

Original GPT Image explanation of the co-op Lost Connection host check: the host talks to Anna again, the Return to Anna objective is checked for progress, and the fallback is the host-save support route.

Church roof: take the key individually and equip it

  1. Find the box next to Anna and pick up the church roof key on its own, not with Take All.
  2. Do not use the key on other locked chests or crates; equip it before opening the roof door.
  3. If it disappeared or was consumed without opening the door, the developer says to speak to Anna for another key. This is published guidance, not a recovery test performed here.

Skinwalker name changes in the October 15 note

The patch note says Skinwalker is now listed as Scout Trader / General Trader. Keep these labels in mind when comparing the older quest-help wording with the updated interface. The note does not supply NPC coordinates, a new quest route or a verified two-panel layout.

Recovering keys from Breaking the Radio Silence, The Way Home and Rise Above the Cold

The 12 October official patch post provides the following recovery steps for the three named quests:

  • Search the character's inventory and the reward chest first.
  • If neither contains the missing key, contact Anna or the Skinwalker to recover it.

These two NPC names and the inventory / reward-chest path are the only key-recovery steps the developer lists. This article does not give NPC coordinates, does not list alternative vendors, and does not promise that every key disappearance is recoverable through Anna or the Skinwalker without a future patch.

Tool, crafting and travel limits from the developer re-read

These are current boundaries in the developer text updated 16 October 2026 and re-read on 19 October 2026, not a separate test by this site: the game was not installed and no map was walked for this re-read.

  • Moon Rock needs a quality iron pickaxe. The developer says the basic iron pickaxe's description is misleading; that tool is not sufficient for Moon Rock, and the developer adds that Bunker 21 has one. That is a named location only — no interior position, no route to it and no promise that it is there in every save.
  • The refined flint sledgehammer is not yet implemented. Its blueprint can drop, but does not unlock crafting.
  • After studying the Large Wooden Chest blueprint, the recipe still does not appear as a craftable item.
  • Craftable quick-travel recipes are not yet unlocked. Already placed fixed travel points can be used, and the developer names five of them: Horizon, House Camp Church, Solar Warehouse, Crows Nest and Last Stand. This re-read checked only those names in the written text; it did not check how to reach them or whether the map has no other fixed points.
  • The 12 October 2026 news post fixes recipe pinning in menus. Controller crafting has needed repeated fixes across October and is not claimed as fully fixed here.

Backup and save advice (updated 16 October 2026, re-read 18 October 2026)

Before a major quest step, the developer recommends copying the world save (.pfs) to a separate folder. Restore it only after the game has been closed. This page does not provide a Steam Cloud conflict-resolution procedure or a specific save folder; it does not promise to repair an already blocked save.

Source

Verification carried out on 2026-10-13 against the 12 October 2026 official Steam news post and the developer-pinned Steam discussion thread. The Quest Issues thread supports the High Frequency, Lunar clothing, Rat Queen Logan conditional continuation, Meet the Leader Space-skip and church roof key sections. The separate Known Issues thread supports the tool, crafting and travel limits. Both developer threads were updated 16 October and re-read 18 October 2026. The Lost Connection support thread and the separate Solar Crossing and Meet the Leader player threads were re-read on 20 October 2026. Developer guidance and unconfirmed player reports are identified separately; player reports alone do not establish a cause or a successful repair. This is not an in-progress playthrough on this site. See the sources panel on this article and the permafrost hub.

Correction

Our earlier short answer did not name the three named quests covered by the published recovery advice. The steps above apply only to those quests, not every lost key or every blocked save. Our earlier tool / crafting disclaimer has been replaced with current developer text — this is not a new test or a guarantee of current build behaviour.

The Way Home: Skinwalker's box and missing blueprints

For The Way Home, the developer's 16 October workaround says to press Space to skip the end of Skinwalker's dialogue if the box will not open or the blueprints do not appear. In co-op, have the host do the Skinwalker quests and open the box alone; the same host-only instruction applies when two Skinwalker keys appear. The developer separately warns that taking the blueprint before the quest starts, or repairing the tower before High Frequency starts, may block registration. Those are known ordering problems, not proof that pressing Space repairs an already-affected save. No controller-equivalent button or save-edit procedure is established here.
