ANSWER · Big Walk

Big Walk PC crashes, stuttering, low FPS and controller fixes

The developer's own troubleshooting order for a crashing or stuttering Big Walk, the Render Scale and Quality steps for low FPS, the Windows 11 driver check, and the Mac controller fix.

Answer: Work the FAQ's order: check the minimum requirements, update Windows, run as administrator, verify game files on Steam, update your GPU drivers, then close background apps. If it still crashes or blacks out, update the Microsoft C++ Redistributable and on Windows 11 check for the inpoutx64 driver.

Start here, in this order

The developer FAQ publishes a fixed sequence for a PC where Big Walk "is crashing, freezing, or just not working properly", and it is worth following it in order rather than jumping to the end:

  1. Check that your computer meets the minimum system requirements listed on Steam.
  2. Make sure Windows is up to date.
  3. Try running the game as administrator.
  4. Verify integrity of game files on Steam.
  5. Make sure your graphics card drivers are up to date.
  6. Disable other applications running in the background.

That list is the FAQ's own wording. We have not reproduced any of these failures ourselves, so treat it as a published order to try, not as a guarantee for a particular machine.

If it still crashes, freezes, stutters or blacks out

The FAQ adds three more steps for a game that is "still crashing, freezing, stuttering, or your screen goes black when trying to play":

  • Make sure your installed versions of the Microsoft C++ Redistributable are up to date and uncorrupted.
  • On Windows 11, check whether you have a problematic driver called inpoutx64 installed on your computer.
  • If all of that fails, and you have searched the rest of the FAQ, e-mail the studio.

The inpoutx64 check is the one that is specific to Windows 11. The FAQ also names the symptoms of a broken driver on that system as freezes, crashes, and poor performance or stuttering, and it links to a Microsoft report with a workaround of disabling the driver.

Low frame rate: Render Scale, then Quality

The FAQ gives a three-step in-game adjustment for a bad framerate, and the order matters because the two settings load the machine differently:

  1. Go to Settings > Graphics and lower your "Render Scale". This reduces the GPU load.
  2. Then go to Settings > Graphics and lower the "Quality" setting. This lowers the CPU and GPU load.
  3. Finally, try increasing "Render Scale" back up gradually.

The FAQ explains that this balances CPU against GPU and should make the game run smoother on your computer. No target frame rate is published, and we have not benchmarked any hardware.

Your controller or gamepad is not working

The FAQ's controller section, in its own order:

  1. Visit a controller testing website such as https://controllertest.io.
  2. Disconnect other peripherals to make sure none are conflicting with your controller.
  3. If you are on Mac with an Xbox wireless controller under Steam, switch from a USB-C direct connection to Bluetooth, create a profile for the Steam app under System Settings > Game Controllers, and enable two permissions for Steam: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility, and System Settings > Privacy & Security > Input monitoring.

The FAQ is explicit that Xbox wireless controllers have been reported not working well on Mac when using Steam, and that the Bluetooth route and the two macOS permissions are the workarounds. Console controllers are not covered by that section.

Controls and rebinding

Mouse and keyboard and game controllers are both supported: the FAQ answers the question "Can I use a mouse and keyboard? A game controller?" with "Both will work well. The computer version of the game supports most game controllers. And we even support the mouse mode of the Nintendo Switch 2." Controls can be changed under Settings > Rebinding. No individual key binding is published, so this page does not give you a key map, and we have not tested the bindings in game.

One thing to know before you troubleshoot

Progress is saved by the host, not by each player: the FAQ says "The game host saves your progress automatically" and that the host is "the keeper of the save game and all of your progress", so the host has to start playing first. If a session is behaving oddly, check who is hosting before you reinstall anything. See the group size and communication answer for the full hosting and Join Code flow, and the PC and Mac requirements for the published hardware tiers.
