Answer: Solo or 1–4 online. Licences unlock by star rating and stay unlocked after a rating drop. Options → Difficulty changes existing saves; most rules start next game day. Wiping pushes items defaults off in Cozy Nook. The drink menu holds 16 slots. Pay staff one by one for task credit; Property shows unmet requirements.

How many players, and which modes

The Steam EA listing still lists 1–4 players, single-player and online co-op for Barfender. The article does not invent a host/join flow, lobby UI or matchmaking geography. Spring 2027 is named on the same page as a roadmap target for the 1.0 exit, not a confirmed release date.

Licences unlock by star rating, not story quests

The announcement read on 16 October 2026 ("Barfender Update: Progression, Instruments & Fixes") confirms that licences now unlock once the bar reaches the required star rating. Story-quest progress is no longer the gate, and once a licence unlocks it stays unlocked even if the rating later drops. Specific star thresholds per licence are not published in the announcement read on 2026-10-16, so this article does not tabulate them.

Cozy Nook is the built-in "quiet shift" mode

The announcement lists the following rules for Cozy Nook difficulty. In Cozy Nook, vomiting customers, Hobo and Thief, and Hussein's visits do not appear. The matching gameplay options are locked for that mode and cannot be toggled back on inside it. The announcement does not establish the default difficulty or every rule in other modes.

Floor running, instruments and multiplayer

The same announcement updates the staff side of the floor: assigning an employee to a table no longer enforces the distance limit. Updated guitar and drum sounds are present, and the announcement read on 18 October 2026 ("Difficulty Options, Streamer Mode & Performance") describes multiplayer strum as synchronised across all instruments, not only the guitar. The full input map for any instrument is not part of either announcement read; an instrument tutorial is left out until a dedicated source confirms it. The earlier announcement adds a save-compatibility message for returning demo players. The message contents and save loading were not examined, so the wording change alone does not establish compatibility or a recovery fix.

Difficulty Options, Streamer Mode & Performance (announcement checked 18 October 2026)

The announcement consulted on 18 October 2026 is titled "Difficulty Options, Streamer Mode & Performance" on the Steam Community allnews feed for Barfender. The feed shows a relative timestamp of 1:08pm only; that relative timestamp does not establish the calendar publish date, so the body refers to it as the "announcement checked 18 October 2026" rather than as a dated "Oct 18 patch".

The same announcement states these changes inside the current build:

  • Options → Difficulty can change rules inside an existing save. The setting can be applied mid-save rather than requiring a fresh save; however, the announcement states that Difficulty and most of its rules take effect from the next game day, not immediately.
  • Wiping pushes items default off in Cozy Nook. The Wiping-pushes-items rule is off by default in Cozy Nook, so the cloth slides over glasses and money instead of sweeping them off the table unless the player turns it back on. The announcement does not name a default for that toggle in the standard difficulty modes.
  • Drink menu capacity rises from 8 to 16. The same note states that the available drink slots in the bar have been raised from 8 to 16 in this build. Specific drink additions or removals are not tabulated here because the announcement does not list them.
  • "Pay all employees" counts toward task progress when paid individually. Paying each employee individually also registers toward the relevant task progression. The announcement does not list the per-employee cost or the task threshold; this article does not invent a price.
  • Property app lists only unmet conditions. The Property app surfaces unmet conditions only; completed requirements are not repeated. Rooms that are merely short of money are no longer marked as locked, because a money shortfall is not the same as an unmet condition.

The same note also describes performance work (RenderScale and FSR settings, plus unspecified optimisations). The page does not promise a frame-rate target; RenderScale, FSR and optimisation notes are not framed here as a FPS guarantee. Streamer Mode shows Live, Connecting, Reconnecting or an error in the main menu, Multiplayer lobby and pause menu. Twitch runs in the host's game, not a guest's. Channel linking enables integration; account-linking instructions are outside this guide.

Future staff roles stay future

The announcement read on 18 October 2026 does not move Cleaners, Bouncers or Bartenders from the future-roster list into the live staff list. Those roles remain planned but not yet available; this page does not certify any of them as currently playable.

What this page reads

This page reads the Steam US-English EA listing from 2026-10-14, the Progression/Instruments announcement read on 16 October 2026 and the Difficulty/Streamer/Performance announcement read on 18 October 2026. The dates in the sources panel are reading dates. The latest Difficulty entry displayed 1:08pm without a calendar publication date; no numeric build is inferred from it. A Spring 2027 release event, full instrument controls, exact star thresholds per licence, FPS guarantees and the live availability of Cleaners, Bouncers and Bartenders are not part of what was read and are left out.

Serving-space and sobering changes

The Difficulty Options update separates healing from sobering: drink strength affects healing, while Coffee and Coke now sober customers gradually rather than instantly. It also prevents customers being seated at counter positions where a fridge, barrel or other surface object blocks the serving space. If an expected seat is not being used, check whether you have obstructed that serving area before treating it as a missing customer.

The same notes rename the Multiplayer screen's Bartender button to Edit Character and add two previewable player voices in the avatar creator. The returning-Demo message is now shown only when no full-game save exists; that condition is not a promise that an old Demo save can transfer.
